Landfill gas
Landfill gas capture projects install collection systems at municipal solid waste landfills to capture the methane produced by decomposing organic material. The captured gas is either flared — destroying the methane — or used to generate electricity or heat, replacing fossil fuel combustion. Credits are issued for the methane destroyed or the fossil fuel emissions displaced, whichever methodology applies.
